Dr. Cohen has completed the first implantation of the Inspire V device in an ambulatory surgery setting at Optum Dayop Center, marking a milestone in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at the facility.

Inspire V is the newest generation of Inspire’s upper airway stimulation therapy, the only FDA-approved implantable treatment for moderate to severe OSA in patients who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. Unlike its predecessor, Inspire IV, which required three implanted components, Inspire V integrates the respiratory sensor directly into the neurostimulator — reducing the device to two components and simplifying the surgical procedure. The system also features a Bluetooth-enabled remote and programmer, allowing physicians to adjust settings wirelessly and giving patients a more streamlined way to activate therapy each night.

During sleep, the device delivers mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve, which controls tongue and airway muscle movement, keeping the airway open and reducing apnea events without a mask, hose, or forced air pressure. The outpatient procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about two to three hours, with most patients discharged the same day.
