Leo Otake MD, PhD, FACS Plastic Surgeon & Reconstructive Microsurgeon graduated magna cum laude from University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his medical degree at Yale School of Medicine & was recognized as Burn Resident of the Year plus won the Corso Research Prize in Plastic Surgery. He received a Ph.D. in cell biology & biochemistry. He completed his residency in plastic surgery under the direction of Dr. John Persing at Yale New Haven Hospital. then his fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at Stanford University.

Dr. Otake specializes in breast reconstruction using the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap method. This cutting-edge procedure harvests a woman’s own skin, fat & blood vessels (perforators) from her lower abdomen & transfers them to her chest to reconstruct the breasts thus making them look more natural while maintaining abdominal strength & offering faster recovery with less tissue damage. He also performs complex reconstructive procedures & tissue engineering. He uses microsurgery to treat post-mastectomy lymphedema by transferring lymph nodes to where they used to be & redirecting lymphatic fluid into the vein. Dr. Otake also works to reintroduce sensation into breasts that have been reconstructed after a mastectomy. These procedures “are transformative, especially after cancer." He was a Regan Fellow in Operation Smile (Norfolk, VA).
